Decision Making: The Key to Getting Organized - Me In Order
Decision making
Home organization is more of a mental exercise than a physical one. Decision making is the key to organization success no matter what area of your home or life you are looking to de-clutter.

Deciding past the guilt and fear

More often than not, we work with clients who are holding onto items because of guilt or fear, rather than the thought that they actually need these items in their life. Countless times I have heard, “My mother-in-law gave that to me as a gift, I have to keep that,” or some other expression of guilt. The truth is, YOU control what comes in and stays in your home. If you don’t want or don’t have the space to keep something long term, you have the complete right to get rid of something. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t a lovely gift or that it wasn’t once treasured, it means that your life has changed and matured and you can’t hold onto everything.

Do I really have room for this?

Available storage space greatly dictates how an Expert Organizer approaches each client. We ask questions such as, “What is your intended use for this room/space?” in order to guide the client in making decisions about what can stay and what can go. If you want a spare bedroom to serve as a guest room, you should not fill the entire closet with old kids clothes and memorabilia. The closet needs to serve its intended purpose.

Is getting a storage locker really the solution?

If your home has limited to no storage, you must determine if the overflow items are worth keeping, even if that means getting a storage unit. One should always consider the commitment of a storage unit and should be very careful when deciding what will be stored. Will you really ever take something out of storage and use it? Will your children ever want to utilize the decade-old games or baby clothes that live there locked away in the dark? A storage unit can seem like a quick-fix in dire times when space is tight, but in most cases, evaluating the items in storage may be liberating and can save you money in the end.
