If you’re like me, the title of this article bothers you.
And that’s okay. At first glance it should.
So, can I let you in on a little-known secret about why great professional organizers often have really bad response times?
In today’s fast-paced world it’s easy to believe that when people respond to you quickly it is a sign of a person who gives great service and even (dare I say it), is organized.
But with all our achievements in technology that help us do more, it’s (still) impossible to cheat time. We all still have the same 24 hours that everyone else has.
And there lies the rub when it comes to professionals that share their expertise and time with us. Whether it’s your doctor, personal trainer, or professional organizer, only they can provide the service that we need – there is no substitute for them. And while they are providing their service to one person, they are not available for anyone else.
It’s important to note here that a good professional will always provide you with their undivided attention.
Just last week I received a call from a lady who wanted to hire a professional organizer for that afternoon. She was open to learning, so I shared with her why she did not want an organizer that was available for that afternoon. Here’s how I explained it to her:
“There are three main ingredients that make for a great professional organizer, their passion for people (and order), their education within the field, and their experience organizing with clients. As an organizer utilizes their passion and education they begin to gain valuable experience. When passion, education and experience come together you get an organizer that has a full calendar of clients that are ready and willing to take whatever available time the organizer allows them to have. The organizer that is available for ‘this afternoon,’ very likely does not have the expertise needed for the successful completion of your organizing projects.”
The same is true for call backs. Over the years we have learned that most people that hire a professional organizer will hire the first person they get on the phone. Naturally they are busy and just because they have decided that they need an organizer does not mean they have all day to do it. The last thing they want to do is spend time playing phone tag with various potential hires for their organizing projects. So, the path to least resistance is to hire the first person they speak with so that they can quickly accomplish their goal of hiring someone and move on with their day.
Yet once again, here’s the rub with hiring the first person that answers the phone. Ask yourself, why are they answering their phone? Shouldn’t they be in someone’s home helping them get organized? And if they are home waiting for the phone to ring, do they have the experience that results in having a full calendar of clients that are vying for their time? Most likely not.
So if you find yourself waiting for a call back from a professional organizer or cannot get an appointment with them for the next week or two. It’s not such a bad thing. They may very well be worth the wait.
