How To Organize The Space Underneath Your Bed - Me In Order

Happy Halloween! Are you as excited for this holiday as we are? Trick or treating, pumpkins and fall weather has us all ready to bring on the spookiness!

While we all love a little fright now and then, some of us are actually terrified of what has compiled underneath our beds. Let’s face it – the real monster underneath your bed isn’t a creature at all… it’s your clutter!

Many of us fall guilty of using the space underneath our bed as a place to shove unused items, clothing, and other elements that bring back scary memories. Overtime, we dismiss these items and they inevitably start gathering dust and eventually we forget that they even existed. However, October is the perfect time to shed your fear and tackle your terrifying accumulation of items underneath your bed.

Did you know that by clearing out these unused items, you can actually make this creepy space work for you and your household? Here are a few tips on how you can use the space underneath your bed to get organized this fall:

1. Take Out Everything

The first step you need to take in order to even begin organizing this space is to take out everything that you have acquired over the past months (or even years…we aren’t judging!)

Take the plunge, grab some rubber gloves, and pull out everything. It may even help to move your bed to clean the dust and hair that has likely collected over time. Evaluate what items you have stored underneath your bed and figure out what you know you need to throw away and what you would like to keep. Because of the collection of dirt and grime, these items might have to be thrown away anyways, so just keep in mind that just because you have held on to these items for so long, DOES NOT mean you need to keep them. If they are ruined and gross… then toss them!

2. Pinpoint What You Would Like To Store Under Your Bed

Now that you have cleaned the area underneath your bed, you will now have a brand new space to store your items!

Before you decide what you would like to use this space for, evaluate how big the space is. If you have little-to-no room, maybe you decide not to use this space at all; but if you do happen to have a big enough space, then get thinking on what you can put in this area that will free up other areas in your house.

You might want to consider using this space for items that you do not use on a regular basis. Some people might not necessarily want to bend down and reach underneath their bed day in and day out…but there are others that are fine with it. The goal is to find what works best for you. Use your own knowledge of your day-to-day life and pinpoint exactly what to use this space for that will be beneficial for you.

3. Upgrade Your Bed

You can truly use this space to get creative with item storing. If you are lacking space in your bedroom in general, then you might even want to consider upgrading to a bed that comes with storage units or drawers in place of bed posts. There are tons of beds that now incorporate storage space that will be especially helpful if you have a small home or bedroom. There are also ways to create your own storage drawers from scratch. It’s all about getting creative and figuring out what will work best for you in the long run!

4. Invest In Storage Bins

We all know that there is an assortment of dust, hair, and other nasty items that accumulate as a result of being in the dark underneath our bed. Invest in some lightweight bins to store and protect your seasonal clothing.

Many of us rarely have the right amount of space in our closets to keep such clothing, so using plastic bins to store sweaters, hats, scarves and gloves is the perfect way to keep your items organized and in use during the proper season.

5. Use Storage Items That You Already Own

If you are looking for other ideas for storage, consider utilizing baskets, fabric drawers, and even suitcases to store additional items. There are endless opportunities to store your items that are cost efficient and helpful to create the ideal space for your clothing, momentos, or books.

If you are struggling to find a space to store your items, the unused area under your bed could be a great way to free up other spaces within your household. There are many ways to get creative and store items that you may not necessarily use day to day such as seasonal items, costumes and more.

Celebrate this Halloween by tackling that scary space underneath your bed and getting organized for the next holidays to come!
