What’s Trending…? Marie Kondo | Me In Order | Professional Organizers

Even if you aren’t in the slightest bit interested in organizing…chances are you’ve heard of Marie Kondo’s new documentary on Netflix. Tidying Up with Marie Kondo is the latest talk of the town…and this animated, adorable, organized human is taking our world by storm; one expertly folded t-shirt at a time.

This documentary peaked at the perfect time; January is the month when we are all still on our “New Year, New Me” kick, and most are looking for a change. This could be a change within themselves or a change within their household. I decided to watch the entire show, and decided to base my article this month on Marie Kondo, her tidying tips and how I apply what she teaches to my everyday life.

1. What You Keep Should Bring You Happiness

Marie Kondo’s documentary depicts her adventures guiding different people with different lifestyles struggling to get organized. Her strategy in organizing is not only to throw away the items you don’t need, but to also have empathy and gratefulness for the items we decide to keep as well as the items we are giving away. It shows the true meaning of “what you keep should bring you happiness.”

This is something that Me In Order™ is very proud of implementing in our own expert organizing strategies. We understand that many items can bring you joy, and it’s important to narrow down exactly what you need and to display your items in a way that honors them.

I personally believe that if you do not use an item or it brings you sadness, it’s time to toss it. I love that Marie teaches her clients to “Thank” an item before giving it away. At one point, that item DID bring you joy, so show gratitude to it helps you let go of it.

2. Marie Kondo Opening the Door to Organizing

It is wonderful to see a new door open for viewers into the world of organizing. Marie Kondo has a great platform to promote healthy, happy, organized lifestyles for individuals who truly need it. She is also opening the door to organizing as a career opportunity for those who have a strong passion for organizing.

Me In Order is proud to offer opportunities for those interested in using their passions as a career. We have many opportunities for people in our community to go through our training and certification programs to become Certified Expert Organizers®. We encourage those who are interested to contact us!

In my opinion, it’s amazing to see so many people now interested in organizing. I cannot tell you how many friends, coworkers and family members I have seen on social media posting pictures of their newly color-coordinated closets or their garbage bags full of discarded items.  My heart is exploding with excitement and all I want to do is shout “NOW you understand why I love organizing so much!!!”

3. Decluttering Can Drastically Change Our Moods

Marie Kondo’s show is about her transforming individuals’ lives through organizing…and it’s also about how decluttering can become a true value to our lives.

Our moods can drastically be changed when we are in a clear space as opposed to an over-cluttered, messy, discombobulated space. I experience this all the time. For example, I notice I am more antsy and more stressed out when I come home to dishes in the sink verses when I come home to a clean sink. I notice that my anger from the day unleashes when I see that I have a stack of dirty dishes sitting in muck just waiting for me to clean.

After a long day of work, it’s the last thing I want to do. I notice a complete difference in my overall mood when I come home to a clean kitchen. If I take the time to simply put my dishes in the dishwasher after I eat instead of stacking them in the sink, I know that the next day I am going to have reduced stress and reduced anxiety.

This is what decluttering and living an organized lifestyle does for me. Marie Kondo’s documentary proves that decluttering changes your mood, your emotions, and increases your happiness.

Overall, I definitely loved the experience of the show and I hope to see more from Marie Kondo in the future. I also hope to see more people taking the leap and getting organized (PS…you can do this with the help of Me In Order!!!)

I’d be interested in becoming a professional
Organizer. I was born organized and had a business where this was one of the many things I did.
